We are extremely excited to invite you submit to our new open call!
Death? Yes / No / Maybe, an exhibition that investigates humanity’s pursuit of longevity and immortality through a scientific and research-based lens, where contemporary art intersects with biomedical science, developing technologies, experimental biohacking practices as well as with philosophical and sociocultural aspects of postponement of death.
We are particularly interested in works that are inspired by real scientific methods, laboratory processes, medical research, and technological experimentation. The focus is on art as a critical, speculative, and experimental response to scientific development.
At the same time, we are equally interested in works that engage with the ethical, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions of death and longevity. We welcome projects that question not only how science can extend life, but also what it means to die, to transform, and to exist beyond biological definitions. Death may be approached as a metaphysical threshold, a spiritual transition, a cultural construct, or a necessary condition for meaning, urgency, and renewal.
We are looking for works inspired by, but not limited to, the following themes and questions:
Biohacking as self-directed evolution; DNA, cells, organs, data, and biological systems as artistic material; the interface between biology and technology; DIY science and alternative biomedical futures; the ethical limits of technological intervention in life and death; death as a spiritual, philosophical, or existential passage; what it would mean if everyone lived much longer; whether radical longevity is sustainable for society and the planet; the difference between extending life and improving its quality; whether science should prioritize survival or the depth and dignity of living; whether the continuous postponement of death is inherently positive; and whether this life might be only one chapter in a larger continuum of existence.
We welcome all artistic formats, including performance and live experimentation, sculpture and bio-sculpture, video and moving image, installation, sound, digital and interactive works, and participatory and research-based practices.
Technical requirements: the maximum artwork dimensions are 1 × 2 meters (installation dimensions can be larger).
Performances are welcome; please specify duration and technical needs.
Work must be wall ready and artist is responsible for delivering work to Berlin.
